Convert WIM Image to ISO

by getdeclue on March 21, 2012

If you use Windows Deployment Services you may run into a system that you can’t get to PXE boot. To fix this you can export your WDS bootable image and then convert it using the Windows Automated Install Kit to an ISO file which you can easilty burn to disc, boot the computer from CD and then install an image from the server.

In this example the hard drive I want to store the files on temporarily is letter D. I have the wim image in the root of the drive and it is called discoverbootable.wim the output will be discoverbootable.iso, make changes to the commands for your drive letter and your image name.

After you exported the WDS discover image from the WDS server and downloaded it to a machine which has the Windows AIK installed on it open up a PE Tools command Prompt

(C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k “C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\pesetenv.cmd”) and then enter the following commands.

CopyPE D:\Winpe

CopyPE amd64 D:\Winpe

CopyPE ia64 D:\Winpe

CopyPE x86 D:\Winpe

Copy /y d:\discoverbootable.wim d:\Winpe\ISO\Sources

Cd C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools

Oscdimg -n -bd:\winpe\ISO\boot\ d:\winpe\ISO d:\discoverbootable.iso
